What is the MIB Uninsured Driver Scheme?
If you are ever involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, the MIB is in place to help.
The MIB stands for the Motor Insurance Bureau, who are a body with an agreement in place with the UK government to ensure victims of accidents that are caused by uninsured drivers do not go uncompensated.
In the past, if you were involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, you would be in a very difficult position, other than taking legal action against the responsible driver directly, there was no other path to obtaining compensation for any financial loss or injury caused as a result of the accident.
It was recognised that there needed to be protection in place for victims of accidents with uninsured drivers, and the MIB was formed to provide the necessary ‘safety net’.
Insurance companies all pay into a pool to fund the scheme, and the MIB will pay compensation to anyone who has suffered at the hands of an uninsured driver.
The MIB run three different schemes to help people who have been involved in accident with an uninsured driver:
Scheme 1) The Uninsured Driver’s Scheme – This deals with all compensation arising from accidents caused by uninsured drivers where the uninsured driver can be identified.
Scheme 2) The Untraced Driver’s Scheme – This scheme protects people who are victim to a hit and run incident, where the guilty party cannot be traced. The MIB will look at compensating for damage to property and personal injury.
Scheme 3) The Green Card Scheme – The Green Card covers victims who are involved in an accident from a foreign motorist.
Making a claim from the MIB can be a complex process, involving legal paperwork, medical evidence and financial statements, it therefore makes sense to ensure you have a legal specialist on hand to help you through the process.
