Bikeability

By Graham Bromley

Bikeability claims to be the Cycling Proficiency Test for the 21st Century designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.

Bikeability is primarily aimed at children but we think it is also an extremely useful refresher course for adults who wish to return to cycling or novice adults who want the skills to ride on the road without feeling at risk.

The Bikeability Course has three levels. Each one provides the foundation for safe cycling in today’s traffic environment. We whole-heartedly recommend Bikeability.

We don’t know if Bikeability provides any training for cyclists following an accident but we suggest the following tips:

If you suffer an injury following a road traffic accident make sure you immediately telephone the Police to get them to attend the scene of the accident.

Make sure you or someone attending the scene obtains the vehicle registration number, name and address of the person who caused the accident.

It is also most important that you or someone attending the scene should obtain the name, address and telephone numbers of all witnesses because they might not have time to wait for the Police to arrive.
An injured cyclist might not have the wherewithal to take particulars following an accident therefore it is important that he or she asks someone else to do this.
Make sure all children are aware of these tips.
Following any accident make sure you see your GP.

Lastly, the British Heart Foundation says that regular cycling is great for your heart, it lowers your blood pressure and improves blood cholestoral levels, so take full advantage of Bikeability and make it safe for yourself and your children when cycling on the roads.
