Sources within the transport sector have revealed that the number of bus passengers injured through no fault of their own during a journey is on the increase. Many accidents occur as a result of hard braking and rapid acceleration, standing bus passengers are particularly vulnerable as they can easily lose balance and suffer serious injury when they fall.

Seated bus passengers are often hurt when they suffer injury due to the bus not having seatbelts and the driver braking hard. It has also been reported that bus passenger accidents are common whilst exiting the bus and when moving up and down the stairs, in fact more bus passengers are injured in non-road accident events (such as falls due to rapid acceleration) than in accidents with other vehicles.

Reports suggest that extra bus driver training could significantly reduce the number of accidents and provide a smoother, safer ride all round.
