A construction firm in London have been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following an accident at work which left an employee with burn injuries.

The accident happened when an employee spilled thinner onto his clothing while he was spraypainting a lighting tower at the company depot in Kent, after the spillage he came into contact with a gas burner which caused the spilled thinner on his clothing to ignite.

A boat worker who suffered serious injuries in an accident at work has been awarded compensation of £7.2 million.

The accident occurred in 2006 at the boat yard where the man worked when a metal gantry collapsed causing him to fall 15 feet, he was then struck on the head by metal that had fallen from above.

The man suffered serious brain injuries and it was initially thought he would not survive, after many months of rehabilitation he is now living in his own home but will require ongoing care and support in the future.

Mr K is a retired gentleman approaching his 70th birthday. To keep himself active and to make a contribution to the community Mr K had a small part time job working as a verger to his local church. Mr K’s duties included the performance of small maintenance and repair tasks within the church. In particular on a number of occasions he was asked to clean the church’s Oriel window which was quite high up on the church.

Unfortunately the church did not provide Mr K with the proper facilities and support to enable him to safely reach up to clean the Oriel window. In fact he was left to use a small domestic ladder and in due course the inevitable happened; Mr K was up the ladder struggling to clean the Oriel window when the ladder slipped from underneath him and he fell.
