Dirty ambulances could be contributing to the spread of Hospital Superbugs like MRSA & C Difficile a union has warned.
Poor cleaning arrangements and a lack of resources is adding to the problem, a UK-wide survey for the union found.
“Urgent action” has been called for to get dirty ambulances off the road.
A spokesman for ambulance staff, said comprehensive guidance on cleaning ambulances was available. But they said extra cash was needed as well as the introduction of mandatory rules.
The spokesman went onto say: “The Government recently announced extra money for deep-cleaning hospitals, but ambulances seem to have been forgotten. They are part of the patient care package and no-one should have to travel or work in a dirty ambulance.
“Ambulance cleanliness is a key factor in the battle against related infections and the standards laid down should be strictly applied and monitored.”
Ambulance crews have said that targets, time and money pressures were the reasons behind differences in cleaning practices across the UK.
The London Ambulance Service was marked out as one trust leading the way in dealing with the problem of Hospital Superbugs, with a “make-ready” system. On-site cleaners routinely clean the ambulance fleet, work nights and carry out deep-cleans.
