A two-year-old girl was bitten in the face by a dog that had been tied up outside a Tesco supermarket. Another man and a security guard were also bitten outside the Tesco store.
A spokesman for the police said the dog was thought to be a five-year-old Alsatian or Labrador cross. She said the girl, who was with a child minder at the time, needed stitches and was left with a bite mark on her face.
“It was a nasty bite.” The toddler had five stitches to her lip and nose.
Attacks of this nature are becoming more and more common, see our article about Dog Bites & Attacks to find out more.
It is now likely the family of the girl will make a claim for compensation against the dogs owner, it is unlikely they will be able to make a compensation claim against the supermarket as the dog, although on their land, had been tied up and left by the owner.
To succeed in a dog bit claim of this nature it will be important to establish if the dog had a history of aggressive behaviour, if so there is a good chance the claim will be won.
In addition it is important to try and establish if the owner has insurance to cover their dog causing injury to someone, this could be a standard pet insurance policy or household insurance, both of which generally include some form of liability cover.
