Ford have said that the inflatable seat belts spread the force from a car impact over five times more body area than a normal seat belt. This significantly reduces chest pressure upon impact and also helps to control head and neck motion.
The belt can sense a crash and the tube shaped airbag is able to inflate with cold compressed gas from a cylinder below the seat in just 40 milliseconds.
The cutting edge technology isn’t just restricted to the car driver, Ford have also developed inflatable seat belts to protect passengers in the front and rear. Ford believe the seat belt will dramatically enhance safety and reduce whiplash and other injuries, especially for children who are particularly vulnerable in a car accident.
A spokesman for Ford said: “It’s a very simple and logical system, but it required extensive trial and error and testing over several years to prove out the technology and ensure precise reliable performance in a crash situation.”
In 1955 Ford became the first ever car manufacturer to introduce seat belts and they were at the forefront of air bag technology with air bags as standard in nearly all of their models by 1993.
For anyone hurt in a car accident they need to consider whether they should make a claim for any personal injuries they suffered, if the accident wasn’t their own fault (which is always the case with passengers travelling in a car) then the likelihood is they will be able to obtain a compensation payment for any injuries they have sustained.
