Compensation For Mesothelioma Victims
With the number of people affected expected to increase over the next 5-10 years as the effect of exposure to asbestos in the 1960s and 1970s becomes apparent, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions John Hutton has set out the Government’s proposals to provide faster compensation to all people diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Currently, only sufferers who contracted the disease from exposure to asbestos at work are eligible to claim a lump sum from the state. Hutton’s proposals would provide up-front financial support to people who were previously not eligible, including those who were exposed to asbestos from a relative or environmentally.
Additionally, the self-employed and those who can’t trace their exposure to asbestos would be eligible. Hutton said: “No amount of money will ever make up for the suffering and loss to individuals and families caused by mesothelioma. But no-one should have to worry that they or their family will have to wait years before they see a penny of compensation. Especially as in many of these cases people do not have years to wait.”

Mesothelioma Day
The Action Mesothelioma campaign aims to raise awareness of mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by asbestos. Mesothelioma can develop up to 60 years after exposure to asbestos and because of this long delay it has been calculated that the number of UK cases will continue to rise until 2015.
The campaign centres around the Mesothelioma Charter, which calls for better care and treatment, better protection for employees and more funding for research. It was presented to 10 Downing Street on 27 February 2006 with more than 14,000 signatures to mark the launch of the Action Mesothelioma campaign. This year the British Lung Foundation is continuing the campaign to achieve the aims set out in the 15 point Charter to help prevent future generations being exposed to asbestos and to ensure those affected by mesothelioma have the support and care they need.
A parliamentary reception will take place on Tuesday 27 February from 4pm to 6pm in the Jubilee Room at the House of Commons, hosted by Michael Clapham MP. We have invited Ministers from the Department of Health and Department of Work and Pensions to update us on progress and share developments since the last Action Mesothelioma Day.
