Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation, Cure and Treatment
A spinal cord injury will require a long period of rehabilitation, usually at a specialist Spinal Injury Centre or Spinal Injury Unit.
The average hospital stay after a serious spinal injury ranges from 5 to 8 months, followed by a long period of one to one specialist rehabilitation.
Recently, research has made progress in limiting damage in the early stages of acute spinal injuries. This treatment usually has to be applied within the first few weeks after the injury, and comprises of combination therapy to restrict the formation of scar tissue, and to promote the regeneration of new cells within the spinal cord.
A cure for long term paralysis is still some years in the future, but clinical trials are taking place that could see this become a reality.
