A man has been awarded £165,000 in compensation after being exposed to asbestos when he worked for British Airport Authorities (BAA).

The man worked as a maintenance fitter and boiler house supervisor at Heathrow Airport for 30 years, from 1969 to 1999.

During the course of his employment he was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres from lagging on pipes and boilers. He was diagnosed with fatal mesothelioma in 2006.

His Asbestos Compensation Claim was successful after the High Court found his employers had failed to provide the man with adequate respiratory protection and had negligently exposed him to asbestos.

A spokesman for the claimant said: “Mesothelioma is a devastating disease…it is only right that people who develop it are fully and fairly compensated.”

The man himself said: “I have been able to gain some benefit from the compensation and I can now be sure my wife will be finally secure in the future.”
