A Health Care Commission Report released recently in the UK confirmed
that 90 people died as a result of hospital super bugs in the
Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. The report confirms that
there were a litany of errors and the Trust poorly handled the infection
clostridium difficile (also known as C Dif / C Difficile.
The report concludes that many of the patients that died may well have
had a good chance of recovering had all the necessary steps been taken
by the Trust to avoid the super bug.
Police in Kent and the Health and Safety Executive are now investigating
with a view to considering possible prosecution.
The report has revealed that nurses did not always wash their hands
or empty or clean commodes. They did not help patients go to
the toilet, clean mattresses or wear gloves or aprons.
The commission concluded that presumably their priorities were elsewhere.
Hospital Super bugs Infections
The super bug C difficile is a bacterial infection of
the gut which mainly affects the elderly and was definitely or probably
the main cause of the deaths of 90 patients. It was a contributing
factor in the deaths of a further 124 and probable factor in another 55.
The NHS Trust’s Chief Executive Rose Gibbs resigned last week.
The Health Secretary Alan Johnson denied allegations that some of
these problems were caused or contributed to by staff being put
under pressure to meet government targets in A & E Departments
and elsewhere. The government confessed that there is no
excuse for what happened at this particular trust.
